Biography

Paolo Bramini joined Banca d’Italia in 1996 and was initially assigned to what would soon become the Payment Systems Directorate. At that time, the Directorate did not yet formally exist, but the foundations were being laid with the implementation of the domestic gross settlement system BI-REL. He then worked closely on the design and implementation of the European payment systems: first TARGET, then TARGET2(from 2008), and finally the new consolidated platform for TARGET Services. Six years ago, he was appointed Head of Banca d’Italia’s Wholesale Payment Systems Division, which includes the Italian National Service Desk for TARGET Services. In 2024, he has been assigned to the staff of the Head of the Payment Systems Directorate, leading and coordinating the analysis of developments in wholesale payment markets and the implications of these developments for Eurosystem infrastructures and national operators. In July  2026, he was appointed Deputy Head of the Payment Systems Directorate. In this capacity, he oversees, among other responsibilities, the development of key innovation projects in the field of payment systems, with particular focus on wholesale central bank digital currency (wCBDC) initiatives and Project Appia.
