Biography

Marie Lafontaine has been Head of Section in the Business Model, Capital Adequacy and Crisis Division (BCC) since 1 January 2022. Within the Directorate General Horizontal Line Supervision (DG-HOL), the BCC division provides subject matter expertise on business model, capital adequacy and crisis management. This includes viability, sustainability, recoverability and resolvability assessments as well as know-how on capital planning and internal capital adequacy assessment processes. The division contributes to and supports JSTs’ firm-specific action, by bringing horizontal assessments, participating in the dialogue with supervised firms, and providing guidance on the crisis management framework and toolkit to be implemented in crisis situations. As Head of the Section, Marie contributes to the definition and implementation of the SSM supervisory priorities, including co-steering the digital transformation project.

Marie joined the ECB in 2014. She started by supervising banks in Austria, Belgium and Germany and contributing in particular to governance and capital adequacy assessments. She became an Adviser in 2019, managing a team of capital experts supporting joint supervisory teams in the assessment and challenge of banks’ capital projections and distribution plans. She previously worked at French banks in France and Germany as a credit analyst and as a senior inspector. Marie holds a Master’s degree in International Affairs from the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University and a Master’s degree in Political Science from Sciences Po Paris.
