Biography
Elena Almeida is a Senior Policy Fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), where she serves as Head of Nature at the Centre for Economic Transition Expertise (CETEx). In this role, she leads research on the integration of nature-related risks into monetary, prudential, and fiscal policy frameworks worldwide. Her work examines how biodiversity loss, deforestation, and ocean degradation transmit through financial systems, and she develops actionable policy solutions for central banks, financial supervisors, and fiscal authorities.
Previously, Elena led the NGFS-INSPIRE Study Group on biodiversity loss and financial stability, convening central banks and supervisors to assess these emerging risks. She co-authored the landmark report Central Banking and Supervision in the Biosphere, which established the relevance of nature-related risks for the financial sector and informed the NGFS Conceptual Framework on Nature.
Before joining LSE, Elena spent nearly a decade in policy roles at the Central Bank of Malaysia, the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, and the Bank of England, where she served as Nature Lead. She holds a degree in Economics from the University of Sussex and a degree in International Management from LSE.
