Biography

Birgit Punison joined the European Central Bank (ECB) in 2019 and is currently the Head of Section / Joint Supervisory Team coordinator in charge of supervising the European subsidiaries of two Global Systemically Important Banks (G-SIBs).

Before joining the ECB, Birgit held the position of Head of Governance and Control at Barclays Bank UK, responsible for leading the implementation of overall control framework improvements, overseeing first line of defense controls testing, coordinating the Risk and Control Self-Assessment (RCSA) process and supporting the ExCo and the Board in delivering their accountabilities under the UK’s Senior Managers and Certification Regime. Prior to joining Barclays, Birgit spent 6 years at the UK’s Prudential Regulation Authority, supervising significant UK-headquartered banking groups.

Birgit holds an LLM degree from the University of Cambridge and MSc in International Management from the University of Bologna.
