Biography

Birgit Punison joined the European Central Bank (ECB) in 2019 and for the last 6 years, has been the Head of Section / Joint Supervisory Team Coordinator responsible for the supervision of the European subsidiaries of various US-based Global Systemically Important Banks (G-SIBs).

Before joining the ECB, Birgit held the position of Head of Governance and Control at Barclays Bank UK, responsible for leading the implementation of overall control framework improvements, overseeing first line of defence controls testing, coordinating the Risk and Control Self-Assessment (RCSA) process, and supporting the ExCo and the Board in delivering their accountabilities under the UK’s Senior Managers and Certification Regime. Prior to joining Barclays, Birgit spent over 5 years at the UK’s Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) and its predecessor the Financial Services Authority (FSA), supervising significant UK-headquartered banking groups.

Birgit holds an LLM degree from the University of Cambridge and MSc in International Management from the University of Bologna.
